who could fill the jobs at the
principal investigator level
had to be recruited mostly
from the outside,” he said.
“So that structure of not
having the graduate degrees
here and having all these
companies do all the work,
immediately created a lot
more distrust between the
descendant communities and
the people actually doing
the work,” Mills continued.
“You look at the bosses and
don’t sense that they are from
your own background. So
the idea behind this master’s
(degree) was to try to empower
people from descendant
communities to end up being
in the leadership positions
for their own heritage.”
Students in the program
take a range of upper-level
anthropology courses
and complete a thesis on
a topic of their choice.
Abby Laden, 26, said
she’s pursuing a thesis about
“allies to the protectors of
Maunakea.” She said she’s
an ally herself and she
enrolled to “get a higher
degree, and it was perfect
to work with that community
I was already working
in and being an ally for.”
Matt Clark, a longtime
archaeologist currently
working for a firm in Hilo,
said he decided to enroll to
help advance his career.
“Without this program, I
probably would have stayed
where I was,” Clark said. …
“Most of my friends who
didn’t get master’s degrees,
after 10 or 15 years just
got burned out and stopped
doing this type of work. So
I really see it as a huge benefit
for people who want to
work in the heritage management
field, especially
coming from this island. You
are really training people
from this island to help do
this work so they stay and
live here and work here.”
