Classes & workshops Colored pencil workshop Aug. 5 The Classroom at Akamai Art Supply hosts the “Magic of Colored Pencil” workshop on Aug. 5 in Kailua-Kona. During the workshop, which starts at 10 a.m., participants will discover the magic of colored pencils, especially Prismacolor pencils with Faith Rockenstein. Covered will be the different techniques that can be used to bring vibrancy to art in this one-day workshop open to students of all abilities ages 14 and up. Nakamoto leads jewelry making program Jewelry artist Sid Nakamoto will offer two sessions of his popular jewelry making program on Aug. 7 at North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau. The sessions will be held at 2 and 6 p.m. Materials are donated by the artist and the Friends of the North Kohala Library for participants to create their own jewelry piece. Flameworking workshop offered Volcano Art Center is expanding its offerings of glass art workshops with “Flameworking — An Introductory Class” on Aug. 12-13 and Aug. 19-20 in Volcano Village. From 1-3 p.m. on each of the days, instructor Nash Adams-Pruitt, who specializes in functional glass art will teach the regions of the flame and heat base for a solid foundation from which to build flameworking skills. He will lead the class in creating sphere forms and pendants. During the workshop, participants will complete their own finished design. It is designed for the student who has never touched a torch. Flameworking, also known as lampworking or torchworking, is a type of glasswork whereby the artist utilizes a torch or lamp to melt the glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is blown and shaped with tools and hand movements, forming beads, figurines, or other similar miniature artwork. Scott and Oscar “Wally” Johnson, the undisputed world expert on Pacific Golden-Plovers, combined their knowledge to create “Hawaii’s Kolea: The Amazing Transpacific Life of the Pacific Golden-Plover,” a handy, reliable source of information for both general readers and ornithology specialists. Gunberg, a Big Island resident, is the author of “Say Yes to Who You Are to Create Fitness,” the first in a planned series. Hawaii resident delaCruz is the author of “Hawaii Ways,” a collection of short, humorous observations that were first written for and aired on public radio stations in Hawaii and Washington and now revised for reading.
