Nelson shares ‘Color Literacy’ presentation Dick Nelson will discuss color terminology and introduce the true primary colors of pigment and light during a presentation titled “Color Literacy” 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. The presentation will focus on color terminology and introduce the true primary colors of pigment and light. This will include color deception and interaction, color transformation, colored films and veils and color constancy. Nelson will also be challenging such color misinformation as “Red, Blue and Yellow are the primary colors.” And an even more interesting theory; the Impressionists used pure, unmixed color. This presentation is part of a once-a-month Thursday evening series at the center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment. Nelson was a student of Josef Albers, the most respected artist/teacher of color in the 20th century. Starting Thursday, and continuing on the second Thursday of every month thereafter, a local artist will teach attendees how to paint. Ocean View’s Jen Kampf will be the first artist. She will teach painting a beautiful Kona sunset, complete with plumeria from 5:30-8:30 p.m. A majority of the proceeds from each $50 ticket benefits Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii’s Home Builder program, which works to create home ownership opportunities for low-income families in West Hawaii including a 10-home Blitz Build slated for September 2017. The event is limited to 25 people. Announcements KVA featuring oil, watercolor painter during October For the month of October oil and watercolor painter Marilyn Koschella is the Kailua Village Artists featured artist. Koschella likes to express herself in her oil and watercolor paintings of the Kona area. Seascapes, turtles, koi and fish are what she is usually painting. Because Koschella grew up in Southern California, swimming and spending time at the beach was her favorite pasttime. This is reflected in her paintings of the ocean.
