NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia
medical examiner’s office says Hall
of Fame basketball player Moses
Malone’s death was caused by car-
diovascular disease.
Malone was found dead in a
Norfolk hotel Sunday morning. He
was 60.
On Monday, the Office of the
Chief Medical Examiner said
Malone died of natural causes. The
cause of Malone’s death was listed
as hypertensive and atherosclerotic
cardiovascular disease.
A friend of Malone says the for-
mer NBA star saw a doctor about an
irregular heart beat less than a week
before he died.
Malone had a heart monitor issued
by the doctor on when he found him
in the hotel room.
ATLANTA — Julio
Jones had 141 yards
receiving and two touch-
downs, Matt Ryan shook
off a pair of interceptions,
and the Atlanta Falcons
came back to beat the
Philadelphia
Eagles
26-24 Monday night after
squandering a 17-point
halftime lead.
Ricardo Allen’s inter-
ception off a deflected
pass sealed the victory
with 1:11 remaining, giv-
ing Dan Quinn an upset
victory in his first game
as Falcons coach. The
Eagles missed a chance
to go ahead when Cody
Parkey missed a 44-yard
field goal with 2:27 to go.
Coming off the best
season of his career and
with a lucrative new con-
tract, Jones dominated
the Eagles’ revamped
secondary as the Falcons
raced to a 20-3 halftime
lead. It could have been
even more if not for Kiko
Alonso’s dazzling inter-
ception in the end zone.
Ryan had another inter-
ception on the first pos-
session of the second half,
turning the momentum in
Philadelphia’s favor.
SANTA CLARA, Calif.
— Carlos Hyde ran for
a 10-yard score late in
the first half by spinning
away from a defender and
diving into the end zone
untouched on a rare nice
play in a game full of ugly
ones, and added anoth-
er 17-yard TD run as the
San Francisco 49ers beat
the Minnesota Vikings
20-3 on Monday night to
win coach Jim Tomsula’s
debut.
Adrian Peterson carried
10 times for 31 yards play-
ing his first game in more
than a year following paid
leave and then a suspen-
sion last year in the fallout
from a child-abuse case
against him in Texas.
Colin Kaepernick threw
for 165 yards and Hyde
wound up with 168 yards
on 26 rushes in his first
career start.
A sloppy first half fea-
tured a pair of botched
field goals, Vikings
quarterback
Teddy
Bridgewater
running
into his own teammate
for a 10-yard sack, an
85-yard punt return
touchdown called back
on penalty, and a fum-
bled punt — by the for-
mer Australian rugby
league star Jarryd Hayne
on his first NFL touch.
Waiakea made the
trip over to the west side
Monday evening, beat-
ing Kealakehe in straight
sets in a BIIF regular
season match-up 25-16,
25-20. The Waveriders
managed to keep both
sets competitive early on,
but the Warriors man-
aged to pick up there
momentum the longer
they were on the court.
Kealakehe (3-4) and
Waiakea (7-1) battled
back and forth in the first
set with the Waveriders
taking a 4-3 advantage
off a block by Nicole
Cristobal. Nika Paogofie-
Buyten was the prima-
ry source of offense for
Kealakehe, and showed
her overall talent as the
Waiakea servers active-
ly tried to avoid her
when she rotated to the
backline.
After the Warriors tied
the match at 4-4 when a
Waverider shot was hit
into the net, a reoccur-
ring theme on Monday,
Waiakea began to pull
away behind the soft
touch, floating serves
of Kadara Marshall.
Marshall’s first serve
went for an ace to put
her team up by one.
When she was finished
serving, Marshall had
picked up a second ace
and given Waiakea a 9-4
advantage.
The Warrior run was
finally halted when
Paogofie-Buyten charged
the net and picked up
a kill.
After a few points
from Kealakehe, another
Waiakea streak put the
Warriors up by five once
again before Paogofie-
Buyten sent another
shot crashing down on
the Waiakea backline.
However, a spike attempt
into the net killed any
change for an offensive
rally for the Waveriders.
The Warriors slowly
continued to increase
their lead and the first set
ended when Kealakehe’s
Abcde Tan hit a shot that
sailed long.
In the second set,
Kealakehe fell behind
early but a kill down
the center of the court
by Paogofie-Buyten tied
Waiakea at 4-4. The
Waveriders tried to take
the lead but anytime
the offense picked up
momentum, Waiakea’s
Brianna Ridgway shut it
down with a hard spike.
The Warriors then
rallied for two runs of
four points each to go up
16-10. Behind the ser-
vice game of Lili Laban,
Kealakehe would pull
to within three points
at 23-20, but the early
deficit was too much to
overcome.

Heneghan Fun Run and

at the school’s lower cam-
pus. The “bull” is Parker

the school’s paniolo and
ranching roots.
As a color stampede, or
color run, participants are
splashed with different col-
ored powder throughout
the race.
“Last year was our big-
gest turnout with 190 peo-
ple from 3 to 70 years old,”
says Nicole Vedelli, Athletic

at 7:30 a.m. for kids ages
11 and under, followed by

from 1992 to 1998.
“We are happy to pro-
vide our community with
a fun, healthy activity with
the hope that our school’s
athletic department can
inspire others to stay
