UH research sheds
new light on
deep-sea sharks
University of Hawaii
researchers are a step
closer to understanding
the biology and habits of
elusive deep-sea sharks
with new studies that
have attached a camera
to the sharks for the first
time, and new data that
reveals the animals are
surprisingly buoyant.
UH Manoa scientists
working in conjunction
with the University of
Tokyo analyzed swimming
patterns on two species of
the deep runners — six-
gill and prickly sharks —
founing the animals have
to put greater effort into
swimming
downward
than they do upward.
With most sharks sink-
ing if they stop swimming,
scientists have believed
the sharks are either neg-
atively or neutrally buoy-
ant. The data on swim-
ming performance of the
deep-sea species, logged
with a devise like a flight
data recorder called an
accelerometer, turned
this wisdom on its head.

West Hawaii Today announc-
es the promotion of J.R. De
Groote to the position of sports
editor.
De Groote will be responsible
for engineering and directing
the newspaper’s general sports
coverage and the content of the
sports section.
“I’m
very
excited to have
J.R. as our
Sports Editor.
During J.R.’s
two years with
us, he has made
significant
improvements
to our sports section with a
strong emphasis on local events
and athletes,” said Publisher
Tracey Fosso. “West Hawaii has
a very active sports community
which requires a sports section
that goes well beyond school
sports, especially when inter-
national attention is on us for
IRONMAN and PGA events.

20 percent of traffic to the
summit, according to Mauna

Services.

ly installed a traffic count-

on use of the state’s tallest
mountain.
According to Mauna Kea
support services, 4,695 vehi-
cles were counted in May, with
about 940 being attributed to
UH and telescope operators,
who drive vehicles equipped
with radio tags that allow them
to be closely tracked.
The remaining 3,755 vehi-
cles were associated with
either tourism, cultural and
recreational use, or a few con-
tractors who haven’t yet been
