IN BRIEF |
BIG ISLAND & STATE
Ige returns from Japan trip
Gov. David Ige returned from Japan
Friday, after what his office has deemed
“a productive and successful first
international trip” for the governor. Ige’s
visit was in part of press Japanese officials
to collaborate on customs preclearance
at airports to increase Japanese tourism
to places like Kona, which lacks and
international arrivals facility.
In 3.5 days, Ige attended 19 meetings
and events, including a productive
30 minute meeting with Japan Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe, according to a press
release. The governor and Chief of Staff
Mike McCartney also met with various
travel industry partners and leaders and
a range of corporations and businesses
to discuss tourism to Hawaii and a
variety of ways to boost economic and
business development in the Hawaiian
Islands.
“It was a positive, insightful and
successful trip. We were welcomed with
aloha and reminded that Japan and
Hawaii’s businesses and communities
share similar values,” Ige said in a
statement. “Our relationship with Japan
is extremely important and these face-to-
face meetings were essential. Japan and
Hawaii already have strong economic,
cultural and education ties and we intend
to build upon those ties and relationships
as we look toward the future.”
New local ocean data available
New data on the direction and speed of
ocean surface currents in Hilo Bay is now
available online. The hourly data updates
are accessible to the public and free
of charge on “Voyager,” the interactive
mapping platform of the Pacific Islands
Ocean Observing System or PacIOOS.
Mapping ocean surface currents in
near real-time provides data for search
and rescue operations by narrowing
down the possible location of a missing
person or vessel. The new data set also
helps to forecast the distribution of oil
or hazardous material spills and aids in
response planning. Marine navigation
can benefit from near real-time surface
currents for safe navigation. Other
examples of surface currents data usage
include water quality monitoring and
forecast modeling.

Humane society
warns of potential dog
poisonings
Drought continues on Kauai
HONOLULU — The
Maui Humane Society
is investigating three
separate cases in which
they believe dogs were
poisoned.
The suspected dog poi-
sonings were in the Maui
Uplands neighborhood,
KHON-TV reported .
One family noticed one
of their dogs acting funny
last weekend, so they
took it to the veterinari-
an, Humane Society offi-
cials said. The dog later
died. Then the family’s
other dog began showing
the same symptoms and
also died.
The vet believes they
suffered from antifreeze
poisoning.
“Just a few days ago, we
did receive reports that
some people had found
dog treats in their yard
and fortunately their
dogs had not had the
opportunity to eat them
yet,” said Jerleen Bryant,
Maui Humane Society
CEO. “Just today, we
did receive a report that
another person has their
dog at the vet with the
same symptoms.”
Symptoms of anti-
freeze poisoning in dogs
include excessive thirst,
urination, vomiting and
lethargy. They can even
act like they’re intoxicat-
ed, the Humane Society
said.
“If you put your dogs
out in the yard, please
go and inspect your yard
first. Please don’t leave
your dogs out in the yard
unsupervised,” Bryant
said. “I know that may
not seem realistic, but
right now we just have
to be on high alert and
be very cautious when it
comes to our pets.”
The Humane Society
asked everyone to keep
an eye on their dogs and
for anyone who may seem
suspicious.
LIHUE — Scientists
say Kauai’s drought is
expected to worsen in
some areas while improv-
ing in others.
The Garden Island
Reports that National
Weather
Service
hydrologist
Kevin
Kodama says wind-
ward sides of the island
should get more rain
but the leeward sides
will stay dry.
Interior Kauai and

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

are
abnor-
mally dry, while NWS
Honolulu meteorolo-
gist Tom Birchard says
much of the coastline is
dealing with a moderate
drought.
Birchard says rain lev-
els across Kauai this year
have been about 50 per-
cent below normal.
The culprit is El Nino,
the irregular weather
pattern that causes tem-
perature and rainfall
changes in the Pacific
Ocean.
Department of Water
spokeswoman
Kim
Tamaoka says the dry
conditions have not had
any significant effect of
the county’s water supply
so far.
