Three years after the last

Center, the native animal
rescue facility is hard at
work giving the injured a
secondchance.
The center, based
in
Kapaau, provides care and
rehabilitation of winged
creatures from across the
archipelago, and also train-
ing inwildlife rescue.HWC
iscelebrating itsthirdbirth-

birds in its care, includ-

gathering of about 30 peo-
ple at the center that they
werepartofanetwork that

“We are the center but
it takes eyes everywhere,”
Elliott said. “All of you
spreading thewordwe are
here gives us the opportu-
nity to savemoreanimals.”
Elliott has been rehabili-
tating animals in Hawaii
and elsewhere for decades.
It struck her as odd that
a wildlife hospital was
lacking in a state with the
distinction of being the
endangered species capital
of theU.S. Elliott drew up
the first plans for the cen-
ter in 1994, but it wasn’t
until a decade later that
the center gained traction
under the umbrella of the
North Kohala Community

Something’s fishy in Puako—
at least according to handyman
and charter boat captain Will
Little.
“It has come to my attention
that there is an illegal slaughter
of reef fishand the takingofpro-
tected green sea turtles. There
doesn’t seem tobeanyway toget
the locals, either residentsor law
enforcement, todo anything so I
am appealing to theworld news
and Fox News’ ability to reach
themasses,”Littlewrote toWest
Hawaii Today. “It is my job to
take people out and enjoy what
God has given us — dolphins,
whales, turtles and a myriad of
other beautiful creatures. It has
come tomy attention that there
is a very small group of people
not from our island going in at
night and killing pretty much
everything in sight. With all
of the federal monies spent on
worthless programs, I appeal to
you guys to bring this to the
attention of the world so that
maybewe canput a stop to it.”

“It is our major fundraiser for us,”
said FL-WR Past President Bette
Green. “It isnot somuch that the race
earns money, but it keeps us in the

reminder ofwhywe are here and how
importantbooksand literacyare.”
FL-WR is a nonprofit organization
thatwas formed in 2010with the pri-
mary goal of bringing a Hawaii state
library to theWaikoloa region.
Many
strides have been made
toward that goal. A piece of land by
theWaikoloa Stableshas been secured
as the land for the library, commu-
nity support and government backing
have been garnered, and the state has
released funds for the design of the
librarybuilding.

decorated bookmobile has filled the
void in themeantime.
