Building Hawaii Since 1921 HAWAI‘I ISLAND CHAMBER The recipients of the $2,000 Hawai‘i Island Chamber of Commerce scholarships are University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Business & Economics students Yuye Zhao, left, and Victoria Magana Ledesma, right, with HICC Executive Officer Miles Yoshioka. students at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College since 1989 through an endowment fund managed by the University of Hawai‘i Foundation. Over the years, HICC has awarded more than $140,000 to UH-Hilo students enrolled in the College of Business and Economics and $33,000 to HCC students who have excelled in academic and extracurricular achievements. Chamber Scholarship recipients could be our future business leaders, all with a common commitment and drive to succeed. This year’s winners are no exceptions, with each receiving $2,000 toward their education at UH-Hilo. Kona-raised and Konawaena graduate Victoria Magana Ledesma is pursuing a double major — business administration with a concentration in finance and sociology. Having spent her sophomore year on a student exchange at Florida International University, she is looking forward to studying abroad in Spain during the fall 2017 semester. Magana Ledesma recently completed an internship with the East Hawaii Small Business Development Center and is spending this summer as an intern with the Four Seasons Hualalai Finance Department. Finance major Yuye Zhao is a junior at UH-Hilo with a 3.90 GPA. Having moved from China in 2014, Zhao was able to overcome the language barrier through hard work and persistence by first completing the Hawai‘i Community College’s Intensive English Program; then passing the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam which enabled her to enroll at UH-Hilo. Other interests and talents keep this student busy. Zhao earned a certificate of achievement from the Arts Grade Examination Committee Hubei Vocational Arts School of Hubei Mass Gallery in electronic keyboard and earned a Certificate of Arts Grade Examination of China, the Music Grade Examination Committee of Hubei Musicians’ Association in Chinese bamboo flute.
