Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, April 20, 2017 3 Healthy fun for keiki, ohana set for Saturday The 18th annual Waimea Healthy Keiki Fest is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Parker Ranch Center. Children ages 3-12, along with their parents, are invited to spend the day exploring more than 30 free, hands-on activities related to fitness, health, nutrition and safety. Keiki Fest aims to provide educational and learning opportunities to help support healthy bodies and minds for all Big Island children. “Our annual Keiki Fest is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together to provide health and safety education to our keiki in a fun environment,” says North Hawaii Community Hospital public information officer Lynn Scully. Activities will include safety light armbands from the North Hawaii Community Hospital’s Trauma Team, a bike safety course by Lex Brodie’s, PATH and NHCH and a Blue Zone pedal-powered smoothie bike. There also will be free eye screenings from Project Vision, Keiki ID cards by the Hawaii Police Department, car seat fitting by the Department of Health and a collage art activity with the Waimea Arts Council. Each child will receive a “passport” to track their participation at each learning booth. A complete passport offers keiki the opportunity to choose from a host of activities such as the rock climbing wall or bounce house. Approximately 300 children attend the Keiki Fest each year, which began nearly two decades ago as a Waimea Elementary School event. “They noticed unhealthy eating among the kids, poor dental health, etc., and wanted to provide some education for parents and kids,” says Scully. “It expanded to an all-schools event and then it got so big, the North Hawaii Community Hospital agreed to organize it in partnership with Parker Center and other organizations.” This year’s Keiki Fest is provided by North Hawaii Community Hospital.
