Contemporary Hawaiian classics Kapono and friends to present ‘The Songs of C&K’ at the Kahilu When Hawaii music group Cecilio & Kapono were at the height of their popularity in the 1970s, they just “played the songs,” says award-winning musician Henry Kapono. “We didn’t have to talk about it.” Today, things are different. “The whole music industry has changed so much,” Kapono says. “Now people want what’s genuine. They want to know where it came from. They are excited to communicate and just get to know you.” For instance, Kapono explains how the C&K hit “Highway in the Sun” was inspired. “I wrote that song when we were touring in the ’70s, and we were driving up Highway 101 in California,” Kapono recalls. “It was springtime, so all the flowers were in bloom. I was looking out the window at all the flowers and I said, ‘You get some beautiful flowers here.’ Our manager, who was from Los Angeles, said, ‘Man, those are weeds.’ So I said, ‘Well, you have beautiful weeds here. I think I’ll write a song.’ “I paint a picture of what we were doing back in the day.” So, some of Kapono’s concerts have grown to include this storytelling component of how certain favorite melodies came to be.
