4 Thursday, February 16, 2017 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald This grass is purple An all-star birthday celebration jam for pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage will make three tour stops on the Big Island this weekend. The New Riders Edge Of The West Purple Grass Jam featuring Cage, Greg Anton, Jim Lewin and Bill Laymon features rock/blues/country/ Americana music mainstays whose credits include New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jefferson Starship, Big Brother & The Holding Co., Zero, Grateful Dead Family, The Rock Collection with Melvin Seals, Willie Nelson and the David Nelson Band. The jam starts at 7 p.m. Friday at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Clubhouse at Honokahau Harbor in Kailua-Kona. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the “Big 7-Oh” for the legendary Mr. Cage, the band takes the stage at 7 p.m. at the Honokaa People’s Theatre with doors opening at 6 p.m. Then Sunday, its a 5 p.m. matinee at Hilo Town Tavern with doors opening at 4 p.m. The Hilo show features special guest Bruce David, former drummer for Maria Muldaur and no stranger to Big Island music lovers. Cage has played the Big Island numerous times, including a Jan. 30, 2015, show in Honokaa with New Riders’ co-founder David Nelson. His decade with the New Riders resulted in four millon records sold. His credits also include Bob Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” and “The Official Bootleg Tapes” albums and various recordings with Grateful Dead Members, The Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, David Bromberg, Bonnie Raitt, Hot Tuna, Willie Nelson, Richie Havens and Johnny Cash. Edge of the West duo Jim Lewin and Bill Laymon have deep résumés in the Americana, jam band, bluegrass and hippie country genres. Bill is a long-time member of NRPS, and as a founding member of the David Nelson Band. Jim is a guitarist with alt-country band Great American Taxi, has appeared with Bill Kreutzmann, Peter Rowan, Gillian Welch and Leftover Salmon. Greg Anton is a drummer, composer and co-founding member, with guitarist Steve Kimock of the band Zero and currently tours with The Rock Collection, featuring Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band), Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz (Animal Liberation Orchestra), Stu Allen (Phil Lesh and Friends), and Robin Sylvester (Bob Weir’s Ratdog). General admission for all shows is $25, while $45 tickets include a meet-and-greet.
