Happy Holidays! “We have had the Hilo Community rent the Palace many times over the years, so it seemed natural to ask them to sing for our holiday concert,” said Morgen Bahurinsky, the Palace’s executive director. “They were enthusiastic even though they have another concert earlier in the day. Walter Greenwood will accompany them on the piano and will play a few tunes on our pipe organ as people are filling the seats. “It only seems natural to use our organ for the holidays and I have been looking for more and more ways to feature the organ throughout the year. Last year’s concert was so much fun for all who attended. We look forward to more people joining us this year for the beautiful music and the audience singalong.” “We love to sing at the Palace,” McAlexander added. “It’s a wonderful acoustic place for the audience and we get a different audience at the Palace, generally speaking than we do anywhere else. It’s a great opportunity for the audience to hear this wonderful community chorus that many people in the community know little or nothing about.” The concert’s program includes: “Candlelight Carol” by Andy Beck; “We Are Lights (The Chanukah song)” words by Steve Young and music by Stephen Schwartz, arranged by Carole Stephens; “Dai Diddle Dai (Hanukkah)” by David Eddleman; “Hanukkah, the Season of Light,” words by Linda Marcus and music by Vicki Tucker Courtney; “Hanukkah Wish” by Audrey Snyder; “Hanerot Halalu (Light the Candles)” traditional, arranged by Becki Slagle Mayo; “God’s Love Made Visible” from La Fiesta de la Posada by Dave Brubeck; “Esurientes” from “Magnificat” by John Rutter; “And the Glory of the Lord” and “Hallelujah” from “Messiah” by George Frideric Handel. Tenors Ian McMillan and Kevin Reardon will solo on the Rutter and Niles selections, respectively, McAlexander said. As Bahurinsky noted, Sunday is a busy day for the Hilo Community Chorus. Its 10th annual Messiah Sing-Along is at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 595 Kapiolani St. in Hilo. Admission is free but donations are gratefully accepted. “The Hilo Community Chorus and the Christ Lutheran Church Choir are going to be the section leaders for the singalong, as they usually are,” McAlexander said. “They will be in the audience helping them sing the choruses on the singalong for ‘Messiah Part 1’ mostly.” Soloists for the singalong include McMillan, plus soprano Amy Horst, altos Andrea Christensen and Lucia Samuels and bass Barry Brandes. Accompaniment will be provided by Greenwood on organ, Rick Mazurowski on piano and Armando Mendoza on trumpet. McAlexander said his chorus has worked hard to put on a number of shows this holiday season. “We had a very difficult program on Dec. 3, and they pulled it off, as they always do,” he said. “We will be reprising some of the material from that concert. There is always some anxiety during rehearsals, but right around dress rehearsal, they realize because of their hard work they know the material and they sound really good. They’re just a wonderful group to work with, and they’ve been a delight to me and to the community.” “An enthusiastic crowd attended last year’s first holiday concert and everyone enjoyed the festive music. There were lots of requests to do it again. Please come join the fun and a joyous evening of song performed by the Hilo Community Chorus. This is a fundraiser for the Palace and another fun way to support your Palace Theater,” Bahurinsky said. Email John Burnett at jburnett@ hawaiitribune-herald.com. CONCERT From page 4
