Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, December 15, 2016 3 Halau to perform in natural setting The Volcano Art Center’s 2016 Hula Kahiko ONE GALLERY an artists’ collective Art & Wine Classes 961-2787 $35 onegalleryhawaii.com series continues at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a performance by kumu hula Sammye Ku‘ualoha Young with Halau Na Lei Hiwahiwa o Ku‘ualoha. Halau Na Lei Hiwahiwa o Ku‘ualoha was founded in 2008 by Young, who starting taking hula lessons at age 12 as a student of the late kumu hula Rae Fonseca in Hilo. Young started her halau after receiving her ‘uniki, hula’s graduation ceremony, from Fonseca in 2007. Young’s halau performed in the Merrie Monarch competition in 2014. Saturday’s performance will take place in a one-of-akind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (hula platform) in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats. National park entrance fees might apply. Taking place in conjunction with the Hula Kahiko performances, the public is invited to join kumu hula Ab Valencia and members of Halau Hula Kalehuaki‘ eki‘eika‘iu from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the lanai of the Volcano Art Gallery as they share “Na Mea Hula” (all things hula). Come and learn a hula, use various hula implements and try your hand at lei making. Experience the different aspects that play an integral role in the life of the hula dancer. This cultural demonstration is hands on and family friendly. These free events are supported in part by a grant from the Hawaii County Department of Research and Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and individual funding from members of the Volcano Art Center’s ohana.
