2 Thursday, October 20, 2016 Voyaging spirit thrives at Wayfinding Festival The stars have guided Polynesian voyagers across the vast Pacific Ocean for centuries, leading to new discoveries as well as faithfully steering them back home. Though the tools once used to carve voyaging canoes are vastly different today, the tradition of Polynesian ocean exploration remains an important facet of life in the islands. It’s a legacy the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center has perpetuated year after year with its annual Wayfinding Festival. This year, they have partnered with Hawaii County to make October Wayfinding Month, offering free events each week that allow the public to learn about and become a part of the world’s journey of human migration. Wayfinding Month continues through the end of October, culminating with the ‘Imiloa Wayfinding Festival from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 29. “We started the Wayfinding Festival nearly 10 years ago because it was our way of providing an opportunity for the general community to interact with and learn from the voyaging community — the crew and the navigators,” says ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center Executive Director Ka‘iu Kimura. “We went through a period where the art of navigation was teetering on the brink of extinction.
