There are only eight items from the collections on display in exhibits in Jaggar Museum and Kilauea Visitor Center. The new exhibit space of approximately 1,300 square feet will focus on the archaeology, visitors and park culture. Individual stories and experiences will be shared with artifacts from the park collections. Paintings from the 19th century will be exhibited, including works of art by Jules Tavernier and D. Howard Hitchcock, to name a few of the artists of the Volcano School, and artifacts from the park’s extensive archaeological collections. Most of the park’s photographic and archival collections in storage also will be placed on display. Through expanded exhibition of these collections, the park can better share its history with the many visitors who come here. Historic items from the collection include hand-tinted postcards and the Volcano House guest registers. The history of how the land was transformed into what it is today will be shared through all of these mementos. The new exhibits will provide opportunities for kama‘aina and visitors alike to learn more about Hawaiian culture found here within park lands, individuals who shaped the park and how life is sustained on a lava landscape.
