Vint was instrumental in the design of many of the large western parks and buildings during this early period of NPS expansion. Hawaii National Park, established in 1916, was the 15th park in a system that now numbers 410. The design elements of Vint’s vision remain today as the signature of NPS architecture. The building was constructed in 1932 during a significant labor shortage using park work force labor, but post-construction Civilian Conservation Corps crews helped to complete the building and grounds between 1934 and 1941. This building is the park’s most significant example of the NPS rustic style of architecture and contributes to the Kilauea Administration and Employee Housing Historic District and the Crater Rim Drive Historic District. The ‘Ohi‘a Wing is located in the highest visitor use area within the park and is nearly centered on the trail between the Kilauea Visitor Center and the 1941 Volcano House. It is significant nationally with a high degree of integrity, retaining much of its original design, workmanship, materials, location, feeling, association and setting that contribute to its architectural significance. In 1949, it was assigned to the park concessioner and remodeled into 10 hotel rooms. The building was removed from the concession contract land assignment when a new concession contract was executed Aug. 15, 2012. It will be a few years before the new museum is complete, but the restored lobby area of the building is serving as the studio for the park’s artist in residence program throughout the year. Hawai‘i Volcanoes houses nearly 1.9 million objects that include archives (all of the day-to-day business of the park), natural and cultural history objects (staff collections derived from MUSEUM From page 13 ‘Ohi‘a Wing lobby after paint removal conservation.
