Leina‘ala, under the direction of
kumu hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin.
• Halau Mohala ‘Ilima,
under the direction of kumu
hula Mapuana de Silva.
• Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O
Uka, under the direction of kumu
hula Mapua Greig Nakasone.
• Halau Hula Ka Lehua

Also creating a buzz are the
returns of 2016’s biggest winners,
overall and kane overall
champions Halau Na Mamo O
Pu‘uanahulu, under the direction
kumu hula Sonny Ching and
Lopaka Igarta-De Vera, and Hilo’s
Halau O Ka Ua Kani Lehua,
under the direction of kumu
hula Johnny Lum Ho, who took
the 2016 wahine overall title.
Two other Big Island halau,
Hula Halau O Kou Lima
Nani ‘E under the direction
of kumu hula Iwalani Kalima,
and Halau Manaola, under the
direction of Nani Lim Yap,
are bringing wahine and Miss
Aloha Hula candidates.
Hilo’s Halau Hula ‘O
Kahikilaulani, under the direction
of Nahokuokalani Gaspang, last
year’s kane kahiko runners-up
who took home trophies five years
running, are taking a break from
competition this year. They are
scheduled to perform at 2 p.m.
today in the festival’s Ho‘olaule‘a.
