4 | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2016 BIG ISLAND ENTERTAINMENT SCENE | WEST HAWAII TODAY Metropolitan Opera, Bolshoi Ballet seasons kick off Shows & events Holualoa Village celebrates art and coffee this weekend Holualoa Village comes to life this weekend with its monthly Art-After-Dark and the 18th annual Coffee and Art Stroll. From 5:30-8:30 p.m. this evening, art galleries and shops will stay open late to welcome visitors and friends and local musicians will fill the air with everything from classic Hawaiian music to rock ‘n’ roll for the monthly Art-After-Dark event. In celebrating the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, Holualoa Village’s 18th annual Coffee and Art Stroll runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The annual event draws more than 2,000 coffee fanciers during the all-day affair. Thirty-four local farmers will be offering free samples of their best brews along the 0.5 mile of Mamalahoa Highway that makes up the historic coffee town above Kailua-Kona. All of the village art galleries and shops will be hosting Big Island coffee farmers and a half dozen vendors will also be offering foods. Limited parking will be available at the Holualoa School and Village Parking lot, as well as the Imin Center. Car pooling is recommended. Info: www.holualoahawaii. com. Lahaina Galleries hosts Hawaiiana artist Hawaiiana artist Rod Cameron will be at Lahaina Galleries during the Uncorked Food and Wine Festival on Saturday at The Shops at Mauna Lani. Cameron is known for his incredibly colorful and beautiful oils featuring remarkable landscapes, sunsets and people of Hawaii. Kabuki performer coming to Kona Japanese traditional dancer Takamasa Fujima from Tokyo will be performing in Kona on The Metropolitan Opera and the Bolshoi Ballet are coming to town. The 2016-17 season offers Kona a variety of new and more familiar composers, as well as three programs that may delight the keiki. Singers include Eric Owens and Susanna Phillips, Diana Damrau, Vittorio Gregolo, Kristine Opolaus, Brandon Jovanovich, Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hrorostovsky, Renee Fleming and Elina Garanca. For the opera, there are nine performances ahead: Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” (Dec. 3), Saahiarho’s “L’amour de lion” (Dec. 10), Verdi’s “Nabucco” (Jan. 7), Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” (Jan. 21), Dvorak’s “Russalka” (Feb. 25), Verdi’s “La Traviata” (March 11), Mozart’s “Idomeneo” (March 25), Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” (April 22), and Strauss’s “Der Rosenkavalier” (May 13). For ballet lovers, the Bolshoi will perform “The Bright Stream” on Sunday, “The Nutcracker” (Dec. 18), “The Sleeping Beauty” (Jan. 22), “Swan Lake” (Feb. 5), “A Contemporary Evening” (March 19), and “A Hero of Our Time” (April 9). The keiki may be enchanted at holiday time with Mozart’s other worldly opera, “The Magic Flute” (Dec. 3) and the Bolshoi shimmering “Nutcracker Ballet” on Dec. 18, with “The Sleeping Beauty” following on Jan. 22. The high definition performances will be shown at the Regal Makalapua Stadium 10 at the Makalapua Shopping Center. Performances for the opera usually begin at 12:55 p.m. Saturdays.
