2 Thursday, July 20, 2017 The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival presents the Young Singers Showcase at 7 p.m. Friday at the Davies Chapel Young Singers Showcase speaks on the Hawaii Preparatory Academy campus, featuring young artists from Hawaii and the mainland, showcasing their vocal talents. A performance by young vocalists has been a part of HPAF since its beginning 13 years ago. “We want to expose kids to the world of classical music, which is often not taught in schools,” says HPAF executive director Genette Freeman. “We also want to give local kids a chance to explore and develop their musical skills right here on the Big Island without an expensive trip to the mainland.” Choreographer and movement coach Catherine Turocy, who is the artistic director of the New York Baroque Dance Company, has been working with the students to prepare for their performance. “It has been a joy working with the young singers,” she says. “They range in age from 13 to 18, and their singing experience varies greatly — from a natural singer who needs more experience in sight reading to a 14-year-old who has already memorized half the book.” All the students, she says, are singing in a different language, some for the first time. All of them are also singing opera (again, some for the first time) as well as musical theater pieces. Turocy is working with the students on movement and expression with gesture, giving them the “tools of the trade,” she says, “for their early repertoire. We are working a lot with how to stand and walk, expressing both confidence and the character called for in the text of the song.” Beth Dunnington serves as acting teacher and stage director for the show. “This is a showcase for the youngest singers in the festival, to give them a chance to work with opera and perform Katie Young YAMANAKA Big Island Vibe w July 20 2017 5.
