2 Thursday, July 13, 2017 Arts festival opera will seduce you Lust. Lies. Betrayal. Broken hearts. The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” based on the story of Don Juan, with performances at 7 p.m. Friday at the Palace Theater in Hilo, and 4 p.m. Sunday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. HPAF executive director Genette Freeman says many consider “Don Giovanni” to be Mozart’s most brilliant opera. Based on the story of the libertine Don Juan, the opera, which is sung in Italian, follows his trail of broken hearts and the consequences of his selfishness and lust. The show had its world premiere in Prague in 1787. “Hawaii Performing Arts Festival is proud to be the first and only organization presenting staged, theatrical operas on Hawaii Island — at least that we know of,” Freeman says. “‘Don Giovanni’ and (the upcoming performance of) ‘The Mikado’ are complete operas in their entirety, not just scenes, and this year, with a full orchestra, not just a small chamber orchestra. It’s really exciting!” These performances feature HPAF’s roster of pre-professional vocalists just beginning their careers in the world of opera. Evan Bravos will portray the title character, Don Giovanni. “I’m excited to make my HPAF debut with this role, and it’s a role debut for me as well,” says Bravos, a Chicago-born Greek- American who has honed his baritone voice in opera houses from St. Louis to Santa Barbara, Calif., and Paris to Munich. “This is a great opportunity to perform a role with a full orchestra in such a beautiful locale. It’s also nice to be in a place with a supportive audience, somewhere where you can try new things and experiment and grow into the role a little bit.” Bravos says he has been studying for his role since he was cast in February.
