Dive into the Waimea Ocean Film Festival The 2017 Waimea Ocean Film Festival starting Monday through Jan. 10 will showcase more than 60 films in multiple venues, along with many filmmakers in attendance, special guest appearances, intimate coffee talks, Q&A sessions, exhibits and more. The film-screening venues Monday Jan. 5 are the Kahilu Theatre, Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Gates Performing Arts Center and Parker School Theatre in Waimea and The Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast. On Jan. 6, the festival film screenings move to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. The films immerse audiences in ocean and island culture, and many address important environmental and societal issues. “Films are pulled from all over the world. It’s an extraordinary process to find the most exciting, interesting, fun, compelling and important films to bring back here,” says Tania Howard, founder and director of the Waimea Ocean Film Festival. “People comment all the time on the quality of the films and depth and breadth of content. The festival schedule is designed to have films and topics to fit every interest.” Filmmaker Ben Masters is a conservationist, horse trainer, guide, author and photographer. Though his film “Unbranded” wasn’t specifically about the ocean, its subject matter resonated deeply with audiences last year. “Every year, festival pass holders have the option to vote for their Dec. 29 2016 6.
