Johnson will bring the complex and beloved icon to life on three occasions in the next two weeks. First, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium as part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park centennial “After Dark in the Park” events, and next from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and 3-4:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Lyman Museum. “The idea was to show the personal side of Lili‘uokalani,” Johnson says. “This show is a visit with her at Washington Place because that’s where her family life was; it was her refuge. You will feel like you are sitting there with her.” Hawaii’s last monarch, Queen Lydia Kamaka‘eha Lili‘uokalani is remembered largely for her dignified, compassionate, yet strategic response to the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. But her life also was marked by early, lonely days in boarding school, and later years as a young wife, widow and loving mother to three hanai children. “The lifetime of Hawaii’s last sovereign spanned a period of enormous social change in our islands, but it was also the life and times of a very real woman,” says Dr. Barbara Moir, president and executive director of the Lyman Museum. “Despite the chaos and deprivation of the era, Lili‘uokalani lived her life to the fullest, as Jackie Pualani Johnson brings home to us in this one-of-a-kind chronicle.” Sept. 29 2016 5.
