 The talk of the town

how many hours of work goes into preparing for the celebra- tion. To highlight the crafts- manship of the various lei showcased in the parade, there will be a dedicated booth at the ho‘olaule‘a where guests can view the lei that were fea- tured in the parade.
“Each lei represents many talented hands and endless aloha,” Powers says. “It is an opportunity for us to honor the art of lei making and those that contribute to its perpetu- ation.”
“There are many celebra- tions across the state com-
memorating Kamehameha Day, but the Kona parade is singular in the respect that we strive to be as authentic as possible,” Powers adds. “We ask each island contingent to limit the flowers they use to native plants excluding any that might need our kōkua or that require gathering in a uniquely sensitive area. In other words, we value authen- ticity over pageantry.
“My hope is that the town will turn out in force — just as they always have — in honor of the 150th anniversary of King Kamehameha Day and each other,” Powers shares. “Their presence will serve
as a symbolic promise to our Village’s commitment to our culture and to our traditions.”
