April 17, 2016 • 13 Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will rehabilitate and unveil a new museum in the former historic 1932 Administration Building (also known as the ‘Ohi‘a Wing) in the next few years. The museum will exhibit art, photographs, artifacts and other historic objects that relate to the park’s establishment and tell the stories of the Hawaiian culture. The park’s 1916 enabling legislation mandates the park be “perpetually dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasure ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” This ensures preservation and protection of traditional Native Hawaiian culture and the unique natural resources endemic to this volcanic landscape are interpreted and accessible to the public. The park museum collections depict change over time, how Hawaiians lived and worked in this harsh landscape and have been part of the park since it was designated. Restoration of the building will restore cultural exhibit space lost when the Wahaula Visitor Center and Museum, located on the coastal plain 25 miles away, was destroyed by lava flows in 1989. The Administration Building, as it was originally named, has a fascinating history that transcends Hawai‘i Volcanoes. Though the building was part of the 1932 master mlan prepared for the park by Thomas Vint, his larger influences included directing the landscape and development planning in the early years of the National L C S See MUSEUM Page 17
