The Rev. Clyde Phillips, right, sprinkles holy water during a blessing Sunday of the future site of the Hawaii
Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce Cultural and Educational Center at the corner of Komohana and
Ponahawai streets in Hilo.
‘We have something
so very special’
About 60 people braved a
heat index that officially reached
91 degrees Sunday to bless
the site of the future home of
the Hawaii Island Portuguese
Chamber of Commerce Cultural
and Educational Center at
the corner of Komohana and
Ponahawai streets in Hilo.
It was part of a special weeklong
celebration commemorating
the 140th anniversary of the arrival
of Hawaii’s first Portuguese
immigrant families after a 116-
day voyage aboard the S.S.
Priscilla, a three-masted wooden
sailing ship, on Sept. 30, 1878.
Local dignitaries in attendance
included Mayor Harry Kim, state
Sen. Kai Kahele, Reps. Chris
Todd and Mark Nakashima, county
Council Chairwoman Valerie
Poindexter and Councilwomen
Karen Eoff and Maile Medeiros-
David — who revealed that
Priscilla is her middle name but
she didn’t realize its significance
Trial for ex-officer accused of killing cyclist moves forward
KEALAKEKUA — Trial
gets underway Tuesday
for a former Hawaii Police
Department officer charged
with negligent homicide
for allegedly fatally striking
a bicyclist while he was
on-duty in March 2015.
On Friday, 3rd Circuit Court
Judge Melvin H. Fujino denied
what could have been the seventh
continuation of trial in the
case against Jodi Buddemeyer,
which first entered the court
system after a Kona grand jury
handed down a three-count
indictment in October 2016.
“Looking at the history of
this case, the court will deny
the motion,” said Fujino after
outlining the continuances
granted thus far in the case.
Jury selection will get
underway first thing Tuesday,
followed by opening statements
in the case in which
prosecutors will work to prove
Buddemeyer guilty of first-degree
negligent homicide, tampering
with physical evidence
and making a false report to

FBI interviews
one of three
who accused
Kavanaugh
WASHINGTON — FBI agents on
Sunday interviewed one of the three women
who have accused Supreme Court nominee
Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct
as Republicans and Democrats quarreled
over whether the bureau would
have enough time and freedom
to conduct a thorough
investigation before a highstakes
vote on his nomination
to the nation’s highest court.
The White House insisted
it was not “micromanaging”
the new one-week review of
Kavanaugh’s background but some Democratic
lawmakers claimed the White House was
keeping investigators from interviewing certain
witnesses. President Donald Trump, for
his part, tweeted that no matter how much
time and discretion the FBI was given, “it
will never be enough” for Democrats trying
to keep Kavanaugh off the bench.
And even as the FBI explored the past allegations
that have surfaced against Kavanaugh,
another Yale classmate came forward to accuse
the federal appellate judge of being untruthful in
his testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee
about the extent of his drinking in college.
In speaking to FBI agents, Deborah Ramirez
detailed her allegation that Kavanaugh exposed
himself to her at a party in the early 1980s
when they were students at Yale University,
according to a person familiar with the matter
who was not authorized to publicly discuss
details of a confidential investigation.
Kavanaugh has denied Ramirez’s allegation.
The person familiar with Ramirez’s questioning,
who spoke to The Associated Press on
condition of anonymity, said she also provided
