After all, the credit union was founded in 1936 by 10 coffee farmers who were struggling to make a go of the industry and couldn’t get financial backing. So the farmers pulled together and created their own solution. “That’s what gives us a unique heritage you can’t find anywhere else,” said Nellie Medeiros, the credit union’s corporate development and marketing manager. Roots that Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union employees are proud of today. “We had humble beginnings,” Medeiros said. “From that time to now, we have tried to grow to meet the everchanging needs of our membership.” That means keeping the personal touch while offering not just brick and mortar locations in Kailua-Kona, Kealakekua, Kohala and Honokaa, but also greater access to accounts and an online presence to serve a membership that has expanded around the island, and indeed worldwide. Proud of its place in the community, the credit union offers a strong financial literacy program for the youth, “because they are the future of our credit union,” Medeiros said. The student credit union program was established in 1972 at Konawaena High School. Today, two other SCU’s also operate at Kealakehe High School and Kohala High School. By 1939, a fledgling credit union was catching on. That was the year it expanded its membership base to include not just the farmers but the local community. Membership increased substantially when Kohala Federal Credit Union merged with HCFCU in 1981. Membership opened to the entire island in 2000 as the expanded credit union then merged with Paauhau Federal Credit Union. The institution offers savings, checking and share certificate accounts, credit and debit cards and such conveniences as ebranch, bill pay and mobile banking. Additionally, members can get loans for vehicles and mortgages as well as personal, educational, and small business loans. “When you’re a member, you’re not only a member; you’re an owner and that’s what distinguishes us from the other institutions,” Medeiros said.
