Island breezes, tiki torches, ocean
views and glorious sunsets make for
great al fresco dining in West Hawaii.
Is there any better way to spend a
summer evening than on a patio with
a tropical cocktail hand while you
enjoy tantalizing appetizers followed
by a delicious meal and scrumptious
dessert?
Here are some al fresco restaurants
in West Hawaii that offer all of the
above and more:
At Mauna Lani Bay Hotel &
Bungalows, the poolside Ocean Bar
& Grill presents an open-air, relaxing
setting for enjoying a casual lunch,
sunset cocktail, or dinner. The menu’s
Hawaii Ranchers beef hamburger is a
sure bet, served with choice of potato
chips, local-style potato macaroni
salad, or a Caesar side salad.
Showcasing one of the best coastline
views in Kona, Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai
offers an outdoor patio illuminated
by fire pits and tiki torches. Located
above Keauhou Shopping Center, Sam
Choy’s Kai Lanai is open for breakfast,
lunch and dinner seven days week. The
hillside restaurant offers commanding
views of the Keauhou coastline from
every seat in the house and the lanai.
Another Kona restaurant with a
fantastic ocean view, Denny’s Kona
includes an outdoor patio for those
who prefer to eat outside. Inside, the
recently renovated restaurant features
large picture windows that unveil
amazing views of Kailua Bay below.
One of the premier destinations for
bayside dining, Rays on the Bay presents
abundant patio seating that wraps
around the restaurant overlooking
Keauhou Bay. A new menu puts the
focus on locally sourced ingredients.
If you’re shopping at the Kings’
Shops, patio dining is available at
Island Fish & Chips, as well as at
A-Bay’s Island Grill. Situated lakeside,
Island Fish & Chips presents a
relaxing dining experience beneath a
shaded gazebo.

Indeed, “fresh,” “local,”
and “affordable” are the
operative words at Bongo
Ben’s. In addition to locally
sourced seafood, the
restaurant obtains its produce
from local farmers
right here in Kona.
In the kitchen, Bongo
Ben’s culinary team
makes its own breads, biscuits,
pizza crust (regular
or gluten-free), and hamburger
buns in-house. The
always-popular homemade
cinnamon buns are
served for breakfast and
throughout the day.
Located across the
street from the ocean,
Bongo Ben’s is always a
great destination for sunset
cocktails. At the entry,
two giant bongos with
menus printed on the
drumheads attract customers
as they approach
the steps of the covered
dining patio. Every seat
has an ocean view. Happy
hour takes place daily
from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The appetizer menu
features everything from
calamari strips and ahi
sashimi, to poke and
coconut onion rings. For
early risers, the morning
drink specials (Bloody
Mary, Mimosa and Irish
coffee) are priced at
$4.95. Inside the restaurant,
a cocktail bar features
local brews and
imports on tap, plus ten
TV screens broadcasting
a variety of sports. Bongo
Ben’s is the home of the
$5 mai tai.
