PRIMARY SETTLES
MOST RACES IN
HEAVILY BLUE HAWAII

HONOLULU — Today’s
primary election will most
likely settle the outcome of
this year’s major races.
That’s
because the
Democratic
Party continues
to
overwhelmingly
dominate
Hawaii
politics. The
Republican
Party isn’t
even fielding
candidates
in most state
legislative
districts.
The most
heated contests
in
Saturday’s
election
are for governor

TRADITIONAL PRE-ELECTION GATHERING DRAWS ABOUT 300

HILO — Democratic candidates
for Hawaii races tried to
set aside their intraparty rivalries
Friday evening, as they
braced for what could be one of
the closest gubernatorial races
ever.
Polls are open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
today.
Since 1954, the pre-election
day grand rally at the
Mooheau bandstand has been a
Democratic tradition, after the
then-minority party couldn’t
find a Honolulu venue for
their gathering that celebrates
party unity and showcases their
candidates.
Gov. David Ige and his main
Democratic challenger, U.S.
Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, outwardly
showed nothing but
aloha on the eve of the end of a
bruising campaign.
Polls and political prognosticators
were showing the
race as too close to call, but

speeches, sign-waving, music
and munchies.
Some 300 people, many
sporting T-shirts and signs
promoting their favored candidates,
crowded into the bandstand
and milled around the
area, sampling everything from
the traditional chili, hot dogs
and Spam musubi to vegan ice
cream, cookies and brownies.
It was definitely an Ige crowd,
with foot-stamping, whistles,
cheers and loud applause greeting
the incumbent governor’s
trip to the podium. But that
didn’t stop Ige from campaigning
anyway, rattling off a list
of Big Island accomplishments
and promising to help the
island recover from the crisis
surrounding the eruption of
Kilauea volcano.
“I’m not an attorney; I’m an
engineer,” Ige said, promising to
continue his particular brand of
leadership.
Ige was undoubtedly feeling
welcomed on the Big Island,

KEALAKEKUA — A teen
facing class A felony sex assault
charges was granted house
arrest after violating conditions
of bail, despite strong objections
from prosecutors.
Samuel Latrik’s bail
conditions came
under review
when he was
arrested last
month on a
bench warrant
for violating
the terms of
his release on
bail by not checking in with
his social worker at the Hawaii
Intake Service Center. The
18-year-old has been held on no
bail since July 31 as the court
sorted out conditions he could
adhere to.
“I wanted to ensure there
were mechanisms in place for
him to comply,” 3rd Circuit
Court Judge Robert D.S. Kim
said during a Friday morning
bail hearing.
Latrik is accused of three
counts of first-degree sexual
assault, second-degree sexual
assault, kidnapping, second
degree robbery, first-degree
terroristic threatening and
third-degree sexual assault in
an incident that occurred on
Sept. 3, 2016. According to the
Hawaii Police Department,
two boys approached a woman,
punched and sexually assaulted
her. Police added the boys fled
when confronted by an unidentified
person.
Latrik’s co-defendant, Tyron
Sigrah, 17, recently pleaded guilty
