KEALAKEKUA — A teen accused
of sexual assault remains in police
custody and is being held without
bail after violating terms of his initial
release from jail in February.
Samuel Latrik, 18, appeared
before 3rd Circuit Court Judge
Robert D.S. Kim on Tuesday to discuss
the return of a bench warrant,
which was issued Friday after the
Hawaii Intake Service Center filed
court documents indicating the teen
had violated the terms of his release
on bail by not checking in with his
social worker.
Latrik was arrested at the
Kealakehe police station at 5:40
a.m. Tuesday. He faces numerous
class A felony sexual assault charges
connected to the 2016 Old Kona
Airport rape case. He is one of two
males arrested and charged in the
crime.
On Tuesday, Kim rescheduled the
hearing for Thursday, as a court

HILO — Big Island Mayor
Harry Kim underwent
the installation of a heart
defibrillator Tuesday morning
at Hilo Medical Center.
The 78-year-old Kim has
suffered six heart attacks, the
two most recent occurring
earlier this
year, on April
26 — a week
before the
current lava
emergency
began in
Kilauea volcano’s
lower
East Rift Zone — and on
June 16.
“After he had the last two
heart attacks, it was recommended
by his physicians
that he do this,” said
Managing Director Wil
Okabe, who is acting mayor
in Kim’s absence. “It’s an outpatient
procedure.”
Okabe said two doctors
flew in from Honolulu
to install the defibrillator,
which Kim’s office described
as a “precautionary measure.”

HILO — Although total visitor
spending on the Big Island this
year to date remains higher than
2017, spending and visitors to the
island declined in June.
According to preliminary
data from the Hawaii Tourism
Authority, visitor spending on the
Big Island in June totaled $194
million, coming $2 million short
of the visitor spending on the
island in June 2017.
That slight shortfall came
after several months of increased
spending compared to 2017: April
saw visitors spend nearly $20 million
more on the island than in
the previous year, and while the
increase in May was less striking,
visitors still spent $173 million,
an improvement from the $168
