AHA promotes disability awareness and pride by celebrating individual abilities rather than disabilities, while promoting employment in the arts. AHA is the largest celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the state and is a completely free, not-for-profit, meaningful community event that brings together more than 400 participants for a day of music, performing arts, visual arts, healing arts, hands on demonstrations, and more. This free event also incorporates speeches by disability self advocates and important community leaders. Movies Under the Stars featuring ‘Sing’ Queens’ MarketPlace will host its monthly Movies Under the Stars on Saturday with a showing of “Sing.” Attendees should bring a beach chair or blanket for the free outdoor movie that gets underway at dusk, about 7:05 p.m., at the Coronation Pavilion. COURTESY PHOTO/SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY Victor Soma battling acute leukemia WEST HAWAII TODAY KBXtreme hosts a Karaoka-A-Thon this weekend to raise funds to support former Hawaiian Idol winner Victor Soma, who is battling acute leukemia. The 12-hour event runs from 2 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday at KBXtreme, located in the Frame 10 Center in Kailua-Kona. Participants pay $2 per song and there will be a silent auction also benefiting Soma, who won Hawaiian Idol in 2015. There will also be prizes for those who sing the most. A GoFundMe page has been established for Soma online at www. gofundme.com/victor-soma. As of this week, nearly $2,000 had been raised. Because the event is being held in the karaoke lounge, it is for those age 21 and older only. To donate auction items, prizes or volunteer, contact Summer Carrick at summer@kbxtreme.com. It will feature glassblowing, welding, blacksmithing, fire acrobats, body dance, a fashion show by Double Dare, wood fired oven menu, music and more. Cost is $12. Event is for those age 18 and older. MOKI HINO/SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY Show depicts life of Queen Emma “Vespers at Hanaiakamalama,” a onewoman show on the life of Queen Emma, will presented at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. In “Vespers at Hanaiakamalama,” University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts graduate Denyse Woo-Ockerman brings the audience into Queen Emma’s home as she contemplates her eventual life, rich in family history and the weight of unexpected tragedy. Married to King Kamehameha IV, Alexander Liholiho, Emma reveals her resilience as they attempt to build, side-by-side, a better life for all Hawaiians, during a time of great change in the islands. The performance will be held in the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium and is part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s ongoing After Dark in the Park series. It is free, but park entrance fees apply.
