WEST HAWAII TODAY | BIG ISLAND ENTERTAINMENT SCENE FRIDAY, MAY 26, 2017 | 3 The Joint Is Jumpin’ “The Joint Is Jumpin’” is the title and theme of Waimea Community Chorus’ 23rd annual Spring Choral Concert presented June 3 and 4 at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. The concert is self-contained but is also part of an ongoing theme of the group’s spring concerts, called “The Great American Song Book.” Last year’s concert explored the music of the earlier decades of the 20th century, often referred to as the “Tin Pan Alley” period. In this concert, Chorus Director Barbara Kopra follows her passion for presenting a wide range of styles and moods, varying from soulful ballads like “Summertime” to show tunes like “Anything Goes,” to bluesy numbers like “Night & Day” to songs evoking the craze of dance sensations that swept throughout America at the time. Of course, there’s always room for a little comic relief, like “Lydia the Tattooed Lady,” “I Want To Be A Cowboy’s Sweetheart” and “Hooray for Hollywood!” Waimea chorus show celebrates music of 1930s The curtain will rise at 7 p.m. on June 3 and again at 3 p.m. for the June 4 matinée. Ticket are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and students and $9 for children younger than age 12. The Waimea Community Chorus presents concerts twice annually in June and December, and leads up to the seasonal shows with a rehearsal season. Rehearsals for the holiday concerts in December will begin in mid-August, and new chorus members are always welcome. No audition is required to join, but prospective chorus members are expected to attend rehearsals consistently, which are held on Tuesday nights at St. James Church on Kawaihae Road in Waimea.
