Fresh-catch local seafood is the highlight the menu. Nowhere is Sam’s bounty of seafood choices more evident than with Sam’s Trio of Fresh Fish. This impressive entrée features three different types of fish filets such as ono, opah and mahi mahi, each seasoned and prepared in its own style. For a taste of traditional Hawaiian cuisine, the Lau Lau Fresh Island Fish includes assorted seafood and fish steamed in ti leaves. Another one of Sam’s Favorites, the sautéed macadamia-nut-crusted fresh catch is both crispy and succulent. Served with mixed greens, garnishes and noodles, the seared poke salad makes a great prelude to dinner. Sam Choy prides itself on seafood served so fresh it’s called “From the Ocean to the Plate.” For lunch or dinner, the pupu (appetizer) menu presents an array of choices. Perfect for sharing, the Shoyu Poke Tower brims with quality ingredients. The fried calamari is a good bet, as is the Kona Kai Lanai Seafood Chowder, a savory accompaniment to your meal. Situated above Keauhou Shopping Center with picture-perfect coastline views, Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for breakfast, lunch and dinner; and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Breakfast is served daily until 3 p.m., offering such dishes as Sam Choy’s Fried Rice & Eggs; Papa Choy’s Beef Stew Omelet; the Original Hilo Loco Moco; or the “Sam’wich” featuring two eggs cooked to order with choice of bacon or sausage and pancakes or French toast. For lunch, try the Bento plate served on a bed of rice with teriyaki beef, fried chicken, and marinated fish with egg and SPAM.
