Inspired by Chinese New Year’s celebrations, Asian Fest pays homage to fun and fascinating Far East Cultural traditions that arrived in Hawaii through the decades and still enthrall residents and visitors from around the world. At the Coronation Pavilion, the show begins at 5 p.m. with the Okinawanstyle percussion and dance group, Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko. At 7 p.m. Filipino dancers from Visayan Club take the stage, followed by the grand finale Lion Dance, which begins in front of Island Gourmet Markets and works its way through the crowd. The lion dancers come from Honolulu, where they have performed at the Chinese New Years festival in Chinatown. To ring in the lunar year, Queens’ MarketPlace will be giving away free rice paddles in the color red, which represents good luck. Food booths open at 5:30 and remain open until supplies last.
