Your Foodie Guide t to great eating in West Hawaii ONO-LICIOUS!January 27, 2017 Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows Cocktails, cuisine and happy hour specials are featured nightly at the Honu Bar BY KAREN ANDERSON Honu Bar Opens at SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY The venerable Honu Bar is back in action and better than ever after a brief hiatus of a few years. Located inside Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, the recently re-opened Honu Bar is open daily from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and features live music every night from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Outfitted in quintessential island décor, the venue’s elegant interiors feature beautiful hardwood floors, stately columns, comfortable rattan furnishings, and an enormous cocktail bar where tropical libations are mixed and served. Above the bar, an original fresco painted by Hamakua-based artist, Marcia Ray, depicts the Big Island’s volcanic landscapes as seen from the vantage of the resort. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows unveil views of the Honu Gardens outside. Sous Chef Bryce Velez has devised a delicious menu for patrons of the Honu Bar. Small plate options are sized for sharing. Among the offerings are sushi, poke, barbecue pork pizza, lemongrass chicken wings, island-fresh salads and more. Prepared with green onion sauce, the fried chicken gets its spicy flavor from the addition of charred peppers. The ahi poke nachos feature a twist on traditional poke with the addition of wonton chips. The Honu Bar menu isn’t just about appetizers, though. Try the Hawaii Rancher’s Burger or the Honu’s Burger, featuring housemade bacon, sautéed mushrooms, provolone cheese, bread & butter zucchini, teriyaki aioli and French fries. Other “large plate” dishes include togarashi-spiced ahi served with jasmine rice, broccolini and soy miso glaze.
