Drawn largely from the Tennent Art Foundation Collection, to which Hawaii Preparatory Academy became custodian in 2005, this survey explores Madge Tennent’s trajectory from a young prodigy in training at the renowned Academy Julian into a monumental legend in the annals of Hawaiian art. Interspersing Tennent’s works among those of her predecessors, peers, and successors, this exhibition underscores Tennent’s pivotal place in and indelible impact on the art of Hawaii. Lito Arkangel to perform Na Hoku hanohano Award nominee Lito Arkangel will be kicking off the Volcano Art Center’s new music program “Rainforest Mele” at Volcano Art Center’s Hale Hoomana on Sept. 23. Lito’s music consists of classic contemporary/traditional Hawaiian songs that not only reveal Lito’s heart and soul, but also perpetuate the true and authentic beauty of the Hawaiian culture through music. Rhythms of Brazil festival blasts off ZOUK HI and the Big Island Zouk community are thrilled to announce a special global event to celebrate dance with the new and spreading worldwide dance called ZOUK or Brazilian Zouk on Saturday. The free event will begin around 1 p.m. and will start at the volleyball court, then Hale Halawai lawn and end at the pier in Kailua-Kona. The purpose of this dance event is to bring more people into the dance scene, for the community to come together through dance and to get worldwide attention to promote the new 21st century partner-dance Zouk. Dancers of all ages from teens to middle age will be dancing their heart out and get Kona zouked! This is the second year that Kona is participating in this international event. Brazilian Zouk (aka Zouk Lambada) is a partner social dance that evolved from Brazil’s Lambada with the fusion of Caribbean music roots from Guadalupe and Martinique. Zouk means to Party in Creole and indeed the dance is fun, sensual and energetic.
