At 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to reports of a reckless driver operating a red two-door sedan on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway at the 16-mile marker, headed in the Kona direction. Officers found the vehicle at 9:30 p.m. near the intersection with Route 190, where they determined the driver and sole occupant, Cory Young, 39, Hilo, was wanted in a narcotics investigation by the Area I Vice Section. After arresting him, police said they found two packets containing 0.2 grams of methamphetamine and $4,425 in cash on his person. Young’s vehicle was towed and he was taken to the Kona police cellbock while Area II Vice Section detectives continued the investigation. On Thursday, detectives executed a search warrant on his vehicle. They reportedly found a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, 29 unspent rounds of ammunition, 189.4 grams of methamphetamine packaged for distribution, 0.6 grams of cocaine, 18 hydrocodone pills, four morphine pills, 202.2 grams of marijuana packaged for distribution and paraphernalia associated with the use and distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana. Young was charged with first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, four counts of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs, first-degree promotion of detrimental drugs, second degree promotion of detrimental drugs, two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia, eight firearm offenses, reckless driving, driving without a license and driving without insurance at 1:20 p.m. Friday. As part of the previous narcotics offenses initiated by Area I Vice, Young was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree promotion of detrimental drugs and three counts each of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs possession of drug paraphernalia.
