Man killed in accident at Keaau Transfer Station A 78-year-old man has died after reportedly being pinned against a dump chute at at the Keaau Transfer Station. The accident was reported at 11:12 a.m. Friday and firefighters were on scene at 11:21 a.m. Police said the victim, Gary S. Ambrose, of Keaau, was facing west at a trash chute to dump garbage when he was struck by a 1990 Dodge van operated by 66-year-old Perla Whitehawk-Taylor, of Hilo. When they arrived they found a bystander and police officer performing CPR on the man, who had partial amputation and “lots of blood loss,” according to the department’s press release. They continued CPR until they ran an EKG monitor strip on the man and a doctor at the base station declared he was dead. He was officially pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m. at Hilo Medical Center. The firefighters also assessed Whitehawk- Taylor “who wasn’t feeling well due to incident that had occurred,” according to the department. She was also taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released to the custody of police, who arrested her on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and driving under the influence. She remains in police custody while police continue the investigation. The county closed the transfer station Friday. Normal operations are expected to resume Saturday. Because this collision didn’t occur on a public highway, it is not counted as a fatality for statistical purposes. Driver sought in hitand run in Puna Police are looking for the driver of a car who allegedly struck a pedestrian and fled the scene Thursday evening in the Nanawale Estates subdivision of Puna. A 34-year-old Pahoa man reported that he was walking southbound on Nanawale Boulevard at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when a car traveling at a high rate of speed in the same direction struck him and left the scene. A Good Samaritan gave a ride home to the victim, who is being treated for minor injuries, according to the Hawaii County Police Department. Police are looking for witnesses to the hit-and-run, which is being investigated as a negligent injury case, and also want to talk to the Good Samaritan, who was driving what may have been a green Subaru Outback. The suspect’s car was described as a primer-gray four-door sedan. It possibly had three occupants, police said. Anyone with information should call the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or contact Officer Bronson Kaliloa at 965-2716. Student earns 3-day conference trip More good news for Mehrangez Rahmatova AAUW-Hawaii is sending the student from Tajikistan to the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders at the University of Maryland this week. Each year one young woman receives a scholarship to attend the three-day conference and also tour Washington D.C. At the request of Jamie Pardau, Kona branch member and state president, Mehrangez, who landed on the Big Island to start her studies instead of landing in an arranged marriage, applied for and won the scholarship. AAUW-Hawaii held their state convention in April on Kauai. Six women from the Kona Branch attended. At the convention, Mehrangez was introduced via video interview and thanked the organization for their support. Her heartfelt appreciation resulted in a spontaneous “passing of the hat” to collect over $500 for her college expenses. DOE looking for school input KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) is looking for public input on a plan for student success as it, in conjunction with the Board of Education (BOE), revamps its Strategic Plan for the next three years. But the opportunity for the public to weigh in is limited, ending May 31. The passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which was signed into law by President Obama in December, has allowed greater flexibility and ceded more control over educational programming and standards back to the state level. Public feedback on how HIDOE can best utilize the opportunities afforded by the new law can be submitted via an online survey at hiqualityed.tumblr.com. Questions involve what citizens understand about HIDOE’s vision and values, how citizens define student success and what innovations or approaches can be implemented to improve educational practices and programs with a goal of college readiness. Colleen Hanabusa has begun the process in Hawaii to run for the congressional seat that will be left vacant by U.S. Rep. Mark Takai. The Hawaii Office of Elections said Hanabusa was issued nomination papers on Thursday. That’s the first step candidates take when running for office. Hanabusa served in the U.S. House from 2011 until 2015. She gave up her seat to run for the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye’s Senate seat, but she lost to U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz. She now serves as chairman of the board of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation. Takai recently announced he would not seek re-election to Congress because he’s battling cancer.
