Korea WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged Thursday to cooperate to confront the North Korean nuclear threat while working to narrow differences over cybersecurity, human rights and maritime conflicts. Obama, opening a global nuclear security summit near the White House, also joined leaders of Japan and South Korea in calling for further joint steps to deter North Korea. The display of diplomatic unity came as world leaders sought to ramp up pressure on the insular country’s government following worrisome nuclear provocations. “President Xi and I are both committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” Obama said as he and Xi sat down for a meeting. The U.S. has long urged China, the North’s traditional ally, to take a more forceful role in pressing North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program. The Obama administration was encouraged by China’s role in passing new stringent U.N. sanctions punishing the North, and was urging Beijing to implement those sanctions dutifully. Yet in a nod to deep tensions between the U.S. and China, Obama said he planned to raise thornier issues during their meeting as well — including the disputed South China Sea, where China is asserting territorial claims despite competing claims by its neighbors. US mulls new rules on dollars to help Iran WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials say the U.S. may soon tell foreign governments and banks they can start using dollars in some instances to facilitate business with Iran. The change could prove significant for Tehran’s sanctions battered economy. The officials say no decision is final. But they say the Treasury Department is considering a general license permitting offshore financial institutions to access dollars for foreign currency trades in support of legitimate business with Iran. Several restrictions would apply. Because of the dollar’s status as the world’s dominant currency, money conversions often use the U.S. denomination. If the Iranians want to sell oil to India and be paid in euros instead of rupees, the process commonly starts with conversion into dollars. The officials weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the internal discussions and demanded anonymity. California lawmakers OK highest statewide minimum wage SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers Thursday approved the nation’s highest statewide minimum wage of $15 an hour to take effect by 2022 after it was hailed by Democrats as an example to the nation as it struggles with a growing gap between rich and poor. The legislation now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who said he will sign it into law Monday. The income divide has become a key issue across the U.S., with President Barack Obama proposing an increase to the federal minimum wage and the issue getting attention in the Democratic presidential primary.
