The lunchtime menu includes a plethora of choices in the sandwich department, including the Fresh Fish Club brimming with grilled pineapple and bacon. Generous salads are served with crispy tortilla wedges and fresh Island produce. In keeping with local style, all plate lunches include two sides — either brown or white rice, mashed potatoes, tossed salad or potato salad. The beef or chicken teriyaki plate lunch is marinated in Sam’s sweet and tangy sauce, while the plate-lunch fresh fish is sautéed to perfection. Daytime manager Malaea Apaisa says the best part about working at Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai is interacting with the customers. “It’s a friendly, happy place here,” said Malaea, who has worked for Sam Choy for 27 years including back in the day when he had his former restaurant in the Kaloko New Industrial Park. “I meet a lot of great people every day,” she said. “The customers are my favorite part of the job. Not to mention the view!” Ask Malaea what she might recommend for lunch, and she will likely suggest local favorites like the Fish & Chips breaded in Sam’s secret batter and served with Cole slaw and French fries, or perhaps the Moe‘Moe‘ saimin with Char Siu, teriyaki beef, egg, kamaboko and green onion. “The calamari salad is great too,” she said, noting that the beautifully arranged salad is served in a big bowl with crisp tortilla triangles, cucumbers, tomatoes, farm-fresh greens, beet curls and Sam’s oriental dressing. If there’s a feeling of “ohana” among the lunchtime staff, it’s because the Aloha Spirit is alive and well at Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai, says Malaea. “My staff are wonderful, hardworking and talented people. I enjoy working with them every single day.” CONTINUED FROM FRONT Sam Choy’s Trio of Fish features three different fish filets prepared in distinct styles, and served with rice and veggies.
