With $49 in his pocket and the pursuit of the American Dream, a young Koichi Taniguchi left Japan on his way to California in 1907. The ship he was on would stop in Honolulu and as chance would have it, Koichi decided to stay. Starting a new life in the young Territory of Hawai‘i, Koichi would send for his future wife Taniyo to join him in the islands and together they moved to Hilo and in 1916 founded “K. Taniguchi “shoten” (store). From those humble mom and pop beginnings, the modern six-location supermarket business now employs 800 associates at six stores on Hawai‘i Island. It is a refl ection of the founders’ century old philosophy refl ecting a commitment to humbly serve the people of their community.
