2 1916 KTA 2016 June 19, 2016 Aloha, readers. As many of you are aware, KTA Super Stores is celebrating its centennial. It’s been 100 years since my grandparents, Koichi and Taniyo Taniguchi, opened their first market, K. Taniguchi Shoten, in the Waiakea Town area of Hilo. Though the 1946 tsunami would later destroy that store, my family persevered — like so many others in our community have over the decades. Watching KTA thrive and grow along with our community has been an honor and a privilege. But we couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of our customers, employees and suppliers. Your loyalty and patronage humbles me, as it did my father and grandfather before me. I also want to thank our two daily newspapers. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald and West Hawaii Today have been an important part of KTA’s success over the years. I am thankful they chose to produce this special centennial edition, which contains so many familiar faces and places that are part of the island’s rich history. Once again, mahalo for your support. May we all prosper together for the next 100 years! Barry K.
