For more than a half century the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce has been the community’s driving force in the development of world class astronomy on Maunakea. Fifty years ago, astronomy helped rebuild Hilo’s economy following the 1960 tsunami. Today, astronomy expands the boundaries of our knowledge and employs a high tech Hawaii Island workforce. R E A C H F O R T H E S T A R S W I T H U S THIRTY METER TELESCOPE ASTRONOMY’S NEXT GENERATION OBSERVATORY STANDING COMMITTEES The Membership Committee offers quarterly New Member Orientation luncheons, where new members are introduced to the Chamber leadership and learn more about the benefits of Chamber membership. The theme for this past year, was the “Quest for 300,” where the Membership Committee made it their goal to increase membership to 300 members, which was accomplished right before the end of the term. The Chair of the Membership Committee is Kimberly Pua of Wesley R. Sagawa & Associates. Social The social and “fun” activities of HICC are coordinated by the Social Committee which promotes fellowship and networking among members and other Chambers of Commerce. The Social Committee plans the Chamber’s Business After Hours networking events as well as the annual Mystery Dine Around, an exciting, fun event for Chamber “foodies” where local restaurants and caterers have the opportunity to showcase their dishes and share information with the participating diners. This year’s Mystery Dine Around, “An Evening in Tuscany” featured a fun theme with our guests starting their night with champagne and Italian-themed pupu in the recently renovated lobby of the Grand Naniloa Hotel. Guests were then escorted to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for a delicious seafood entree and capped the night off back at the Grand Naniloa Hotel Crown Room for a dessert extravaganza and dancing. The Chair for the Social Committee is Rhea Lee-Moku of Hawaii Electric Light Company. Members and guests enjoy “An Evening in Tuscany” during the Mystery Dine Around. Continued on next page
