“I’ve seen growth and improvement in the quality of care.” – Stefan Harmeling, MD Hilo community physician Stefan Harmeling was tired of hearing the question: Where is your wife going to deliver your your baby? “I worked at Hilo Medical Center for five years as a hospitalist before going into private practice,” explained Dr. Harmeling who maintains hospital privileges. “When it came time for our children Lance, Kiran and Victoria to be delivered, my wife Melissa and I did not hesitate to go to Hilo Medical Center,” he says. “We live in Hilo, very close to the hospital. Why would we think of going anywhere else, especially knowing that the hospital provides good care?” “We all love what we do,” affirms OB Unit Nurse Manager, Christina Ranan. “We’re glad the Harmelings had great experiences with us.” “One of the main approaches is to promote family bonding and couplet care for mom, baby and dad,” says Christina, pictured with OB nurse, Alisha Alip. The Hilo Medical Center Foundation launched the OB/Pediatric Campaign to outfit the Obstetric Unit with new bassinets, baby warmers and comfortable sleeper chairs for family members staying overnight. “Our goal is to make sure babies and their parents staying at Hilo Medical Center are comfortable,” says Lisa Rantz, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We are also taking care of our nurses and physicians by updating and redesigning the nursing stations for better work flow and patient care.” Nationally recognized 4-star care for our community.
