2 Sunday, February 14, 2016 Hawaii Tribune-Herald Honor roll: BIIF’s best and much more By MATT GERHART Hawaii Tribune-Herald Welcome to the Tribune-Herald’s inaugural celebration of the top sports performances of 2015 and a recap of our Athletes of the Week. Did we cover everybody we wanted? No, unfortunately, not even close, but we tried to choose from a wide range of sports and islandwide events. When we started awarding the Athlete of the Week in late January of 2015, the initial selection was a nod to the most accomplished BIIF female athlete of all-time, Konawaena’s Chanelle Molina. The two-sport star is also our Athlete of the Year after leading the Wildcats to another HHSAA Division I girls basketball title and an undefeated BIIF season in volleyball. In addition to honoring Molina, on pages 6-7 we chronicle four of the top performances of the year. Some were prolific – Hawaii Prep’s Emma Taylor and Ka’u’s Evan Manoha – while others inspired us with their great leadership (Honokaa’s Shayla Ignacio) or a surprising performance (Kohala’s Joey Salvador). High school athletes dominate these pages with 32 of 49 selections, including 31 from the BIIF. Also honored were seven keiki, primarily youth baseball players, ATHLETES OF THE WEEK RICK WINTERS/West Hawaii Today Konawaena’s Chanelle Molina was the inaugural Athlete of Week honoree, and she was the T-H’s Athlete of the Year as well. five amateur athletes, four collegiates and one Special Olympian.
