2 Thursday, November 23, 2017 Hawaii Tribune-Herald White Guava Jelly I have a white guava tree that is about 50 years old. My father planted it by grafting his parents tree in Kurtistown. Here is an easy recipe for any guava jelly, either white or the pink ones. 8-10 ripe white guavas with at least 4-5 half ripe ones ( there is more pectin in the greener ones) Place in pot and fill with water to cover. Boil for about 30-45 minutes, until the guavas are cooked and falling apart. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Without squeezing them, collect the liquid to measure 4 cups. In a cleaned pot, place the 4 cups of clear liquid. Add: 4 cups sugar Boil over medium heat until the temperature reaches about 210 degrees. Ladle in sterilized bottles with a tight seal. Makes 4 pints jelly. Athoughtful gift from the kitchen can warm the heart. These gifts mean that the person took time to spend time in the kitchen to cook or bake something special. Here are some ideas for the creative souls who love to be in the kitchen. — Audrey Wilson Recipe contributor and Let’s Talk Food columnist White Guava Jelly........................................2 Curried Lentil Soup in a Jar.........................3 Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies.........................4 Lilikoi Butter................................................6 Amaretto......................................................6 Granola........................................................7 Cajun Spice Blend, Salt Free.......................8 BBQ Spice Rub.............................................8 Chow Chow................................................10 Pickled Young Ginger.................................10 Gingerbread Cookies.................................12 Blueberry Muffin Mix in a Jar....................13 Gifts from the kitchen Photos by Hollyn Johnson
