Katherine is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and his cold, unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on the estate, a powerful force is unleashed inside her to get what she wants. RogerEbert.com: “Lady Macbeth has the refined, pleasing trappings of a tasteful period piece with the vicious, beating heart of a brutal psychological thriller. You canʼt stop watching its beauty, even as you long to look away from its cruelty.” $8 Gen. - $7 Student/Senior 38 Haili St. • 934-7777 www.hilopalace.com Trio of comedy shows slated Quinn Dahle will be performing a three-show Big Island comedy tour along with several of the Big Island’s own homegrown comedians from Sept. 21-23. Originally from Minnesota, Quinn has lived in Colorado and Arizona before settling in Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy. Now married to a Mexican-American girl from east L.A., Quinn is never short of material. His comedy appeals to all age groups and ethnicities and he loves to talk about them all. However, audiences often come back just for his improvisational crowd work where he can be the most spontaneous. Coming off a development deal with 20th Century Fox, Quinn has appeared on “The Tonight Show,” Showtime, Comedy Central, “Lopez Tonight” and “Carson Daly.” His first Big Island show is scheduled for 8 p.m., Sept. 21 at Hilo Town Tavern, located at 168 Kiawe St. Other performers will include Justine Smith, Bryan Rupp, Kevin Hobbs and Jose Dynamite. The second show will be at 8 p.m. Sept. 22 at My Bar Kona, located at 74-5606, Luhia St., Kona. Justine Smith, Chuck Spirakis, Uncle Jimmy and Jose Dynamite also will perform. Dahle’s last show on the island will be at 8 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Lava Lounge in Kilauea Military Camp, 99-252 Crater Rim Drive, Volcano. Included will be comedy by Justine Smith, Bryan Rupp, Nehemiah Nihipali, Timmy Mattos and Jose Dynamite. Tickets are $20 advance, or $25 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets. com. Shows are limited to those 21 and older. For more information, call 391-5673 or visit www.facebook. com/KMAProductionsHawaii. DAHLE This year’s annual juried Hawaii Contemporary Arts Exhibit at the East Hawai’i Cultural Center Hilo will run through Sept. 30. Juror Patricia Salmon, a Hilo resident and longtime member of the Hawaiian arts community, is a former gallerist and well-known specialist in early 20th century painting. “It is my great pleasure and honor to be invited as a juror for the forthcoming Hawaii Contemporary Arts Exhibit,” Salmon said. “I always find inspiration in an artist’s new vision with the fresh images and different color combinations he or she chooses. Each year, the composition of these individual artworks seems to foster radical new designs that stimulate one’s imagination.” Salmon has made this year’s exhibition highly inclusive and the gallery full and diverse. The culturally plural exhibition, an exploration of the theme “Isolation,” includes works by invited artists from Italy, the West Coast and the Midwest to counterpoint island artists. The imagery challenges traditional boundaries — some appropriate cultural myths to probe the ethical and social values we accept today — some challenge comfortable, familiar perceptions with surreal and abstract imagery. Mary-Louise Totton, associate professor of art at Western Michigan University, explores the myths of islands in her acrylic paintings. “Islands have enchanted authors, artists and adventurers for centuries,” Totton said. “I explore the motif and myths of islands in my work to express ideas about identity, transformation and social commentary.” For more information about the exhibition, email kdaley@ehcc.org. Art exhibit opens at EHCC Mary- Louise Totton’s “The Perpetually Shifting Present, A.”
