4-5 Thursday, August 24, 2017 DIVERSE OFFERINGS Performing Arts Center unveils season calendar By JEFF HANSEL Hawaii Tribune-Herald The University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center has announced a wide-ranging calendar for its upcoming shows. The season includes Irish ballads, Hawaiichoreographed dance, Dweezil Zappa, holiday music, comedy, traditional Kabuki music, jazz, all-women New Zealand dancers, Japanese puppetry and an evening focused on the “plight and challenges” of refugees and immigrants. “I try to give the community an offering of a variety of things — and maybe things that will be new and different for some of them,” said Lee Dombroski, Performing Arts Center manager. The 600-seat Performing Arts Center tells potential audience members that its performances are “equal to any offered by major mainland universities.” Dombroski agreed emphatically. “These are world-renowned artists,” she said. “They have performed all over the world, in some cases, and been at the finest performing arts centers.” The announcement of the center’s upcoming calendar accompanies the start of availability of season packages, which can be purchased online this week (artscenter.uhh.hawaii.edu) and can be bought from the box office starting Aug. 29 at 932-7490.
