Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, August 17, 2017 3 Hawaii Concert Society unveils Some of the world’s finest performers of classical music have Hilo in their travel plans. They will be part of the Hawaii Concert Society’s 2017-18 season, its 56th, which begins in mid-September and continues until May 2018. The season will consist of seven concerts at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center and each beginning at 7:30 p.m. The season will open with “Maligned Master: Setting the Record Straight on Salieri,” narrated by KHON news anchorman Joe Moore (a Mozart aficionado) and featuring an octet of musicians from Chamber Music Hawaii performing music by Mozart and Salieri. During the concert, Moore will offer commentary on the true relationship between Antonio Salieri and Mozart, which was much friendlier than as depicted in the film, “Amadeus.” As piano soloists, one of the truly great artists of our age, Stephen Hough, will take the stage in October, and a longtime favorite of Hilo audiences, Joyce Yang, will close the season in May. Also, back by popular demand in January will be the engaging violinist Tessa Lark and pianist Amy Yang in a concert of solo and duo pieces. Chamber music concerts will make up the remainder of the season. Trio Rafale, from Switzerland, will perform works by Haydn, Ives and Tchaikovsky. Baltimore’s Peabody Consort will perform medieval Christian, Jewish and Arabic music from the 13th-15th centuries, a period when all three religions and cultures peacefully coexisted in Spain. The program Concert schedule for Mexico’s Cuarteto Latinamericano is still to be determined, but is likely to include classics and more modern compositions by Latin American composers. A season brochure providing additional information is available. Season tickets can be ordered using the form in the brochure, or by using the order form at www.hawaiiconcertsociety. com.
