2 Thursday, July 6, 2017 NPS Photo/JAY ROBINSON Hawaiian culture, science merge The 37th annual Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Cultural Festival & BioBlitz, taking place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Kilauea Military Camp, combines science and culture into a day of fun events with music, hula, demonstrations and park exploration. The festival’s theme, “Hilinai‘i Puna, Kalele ia Ka‘u” (Puna leans and reclines on Ka‘u) celebrates the two land districts that comprise the national park. “This is an ‘olelo no‘eau or Hawaiian proverb taken straight from Mary Kawena Puku‘i’s book,” explains cultural festival co-chair Charone O’Neil-Naeole. “The ancestors of these two districts were originally of one extended family. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is made up of these two communities, Puna and Ka‘u. We chose this theme to convey how these two communities depend on each other, and how national parks everywhere depend and rely on our visitors, our partners, the surrounding communities and the world. We need these relationships to preserve natural and cultural resources.” The day begins with the BioBlitz, where participants will join scientists and cultural practitioners in the field to discover the diversity of biology, geology and culture of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The first BioBlitz took place in 2015 in conjunction with National Geographic and the National Park Service. It was the ninth official BioBlitz out of 10 that led up to the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service.
