Get there early to reserve a seat for the roundup of traditional rodeo events, including horse races, ranch mugging, team roping and more. “These events showcase the skills that have made Hawaiian paniolo famous throughout the world and that continue to keep the unique ranching lifestyle and culture alive in Hawaii,” says Nahua Guilloz, a senior manager at Parker Ranch, noting that the rodeo, which will have 150 competitors this year, also draws thousands of spectators. Fast-paced rodeo action begins shortly after the 9 a.m. grand entry parade to introduce the ranch teams and continues until noon. “Skills and pride are on the line during the friendly competitions,” Guilloz says. “It’s nonstop action. We run the rodeo events in between the races, so there is always something going on. Spectators rarely leave their seats.” This rodeo is different from others in that the competition is by ranch, not by individual rider, and the winning overall ranch receives a perpetual trophy. The most popular events are the horse races, Guilloz says, “especially the relay races.
